Default hotcam experts please?

Want to order a 218/227 112lsa hotcam. Found a kit with ls6 springs for around $400..will I need a different length pushrods for this application?

Seems like an affordable cam to install on a weekend here soon...not looking for big power gains..just something to give it some grunt on the weekends when I'm able to drive it..

Yes that is stock, you can"t go wrong with the Hot Cam, I actually miss mine. Decent power and good idle. Add LS6 Intake, headers and you're gold.

Stock is actually 7.385" gauge length. As I recall, with the hot cam, you can re-use your existing pushrods. However, if you upgrade, get the stiffer 11/32" OD pushrods. If you are on a budget, just re-use your stock ones and make sure to keep them in the correct location and orientation when you remove them for re-installation. Same goes for the rockers.

Rather than spend the money on a hot cam, an new timing chain and oil pump would be a better way to spend funds while it is apart.

thanks guys. I did some research and found out the specs on the hotcam would actually work with the lift of the stock springs...but wouldnt be a good idea? I've heard people use the stock springs with them with no problems but end up swapping it out after a while anyways.

i know enough not to use the stock springs (from all the research) but knowing the max lift it just fine for this cam, stumps me on why they ARENT such a good idea?

I would put on a LS6 beehive springs. They rated up to 560 lift max lift and only costs 60 bucks.

Ls6 springs with stock valve seats/retainers/locks/seals will work? Because the 60 dollar deal for the springs are ONLY springs. :/

Your original post stated the kit had the springs. More to springs than just lift, you need to make sure the stiffness, seat value and over the nose value of force will control the valve train to the maximum RPM. The LS6 springs are stiffer so all of the values will increase yet they are a direct drop in replacement.

for what its worth, I bought a new 224r cam and 918 comp springs on the for sale board for $400 shipped. There are deals out there if you're not in a rush to get something.

I would use hardened push rods and 6.1 rollers it will run a lot stronger also springs that can handle a 570 lift cam Alex springs work very well and sit in stock heads with no mods

heres my best bet for the cam. and then order some ls6 springs

again, not looking for much of a power gain, just breaking the virgin ls1 experience. ive had plenty of work with sbc/pushrod engines, but then again, not rushing, so getting some advice from all of you wont hurt a bit, thanks

Yeah, no. The cam you linked is the LT4 hot cam, not the LS1 hot cam. Thats only for LT1 and older SBC.

Go to the SDPC web site and look for the GMPP Hot Cam kit for the LS1. Here is the link: SDPC Hot Cam Kit

That cam won't work. That is the LT4 Hot Cam, and is for 87+ SBCs and LT1s. It won't fit your car.

It looks like SDPC is $10 cheaper than JEGS on the kit you need. You can reuse your stock pushrods with the hot cam. If you've worked on SBCs, I think you'll appreciate some of the stuff GM has done with the LS1 in terms of overall design (especially when it comes to setting valve lash). Read up on how to install a cam in one of these motors and you'll be fine.

I suggest changing the cam, springs, retainers, and valve seals while you are doing it. Its apart, might as well install new stuff. My pushrods were all straight so we reused them. Depending on mileage you may want to do a new oil pump (it is coming off anyway). I also had my LS6 intake and underdrive pulley done at the same time. I took a while and got all the parts togther. All of them had to come off, and the new parts were ready to go on. Got it all done at the same time.

If I had to do it again, I would have replaced the knock sensores and oil pressure sending unit at the same time. Had to go back and get them done later.
