Default What is safe to use to clean a cylinder wall?

I am about to finish cleaning the LS1 shortblock I recently bought and want to know the safest and best way to clean this one cylinder. This is the only cylinder that has a few spots of either light carbon build up or light rust. What do you guys recommend that would work without damaging the cylinder wall?

Wd40

It will also get the moisture out of the cylinder and help eliminate rust

Finish with some fresh oil coating the walls

Don't use assembly lube in the cylinder walls or piston top

Would spraying some WD40 on a steel wool pad work as well, just to scrub the piston tops and walls?

I wouldn't use anything abrasive like that. If it doesn't wipe away with a cloth you might need a machine shop to do the work.

I would NOT use steel wool. It's harder than the aluminum Pistons. I used a razor blade (carefully) after soaking the tops in a product called "Aero Croil" and it came off pretty easy.

I use odorless mineral spirits to clean the engine. I was just worried about what item I should use to clean the cylinder wall without damaging the cross hatches. I got the pistons and deck cleaned up very well.
