The gasket is placed on the block and then the head put on and is torqued down. Then the motor is turned over by hand (using a big wrench and socket on the crank pulley bolt will work)Note: the spark plugs should not be in the heads or you will be fighting against the cylinder compression.
The head is then removed so that the valve impressions, in the clay, can be seen and the distance to the piston verified with a micrometer.

put alittle motor oil on the clay so the valves do not stick to it... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

<img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> man that sucks, I hope you get it fixed pretty fast. Glad to hear that the pistons don't look too bad. Hopefully the valves aren't bent to ****.
Good luck for the rest of the project

I did actually try and get a sound clip of it, but it didn't work out.

I sounded alot like the Keebler elves were in the block hitting it with ballpeen hammers.

MY emotional path looked something like this:
<img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[cry]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
AZLS1 -This is one of the funniest posts I've ever read! Glad you still have a sense of humor. Sorry to hear about the dissimilar metals collision. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

...what about clearance on a SDPC LS6 head milled .055 with stock size valves and a TR 227/224 reverse split cam with 560 lift?

...would this be an issue with stock gaskets?

Update from Sterling:

</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">quote:</font><hr /><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> I pulled the head tonight and it didn't look too bad.
I have a few pretty small marks on only some of the pistons. The valves do not appear to be damaged at all, I need to remove the springs and see if the valve shafts are bent. Thje valve faces look fine.
</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Definately good news <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Thank you for the explanation. Just out of curiousity what is an acceptable tolerence?

Cant you just turn the motor a few times with the heads torqued down? If if turns without stopping, then you have no P/V problems. Is this correct to assume?

I dont know what the tolerences on the spacing is those. If anyone knows please enlighten us.
