Yeah, I would be really careful about adding 5 quarts of oil. It may have only have been down 2. I'd drain the whole thing, check the amount, and check for metal, then refill.
It would sure suck to have it overfilled right now and have major problems because of that!
There's no way it ran for 80 miles without oil. This isn't one of those stupid infomercials where they drive around a track in a viper with no oil and it's fine.
Dope

A 'too much' oil story:
I bought a new ZR2 Blazer late in '99. I drove it around for a month and a half, happy as a clam. I go to leave for a rather long trip, and decide to check the oil at 1,500 miles.
The freaking thing had TWICE as much oil in it than was needed. It was halfway up the dipstick. I drained it all, and I'd estimate it was about 12 quarts worth. The motor was running just before I checked the level, and I did not see any aeration or foaming.
I put a complaint into the local dealer, and they basically said if the truck is running fine, there's nothing they can/will do. The motor did have a very light knock (tap) to it at idle - it sounded like a lifter or light piston slap, but it did it right on the lot with 1 mile on it. I basically shrugged it off, and drove the truck for another two years.
Right around 80K on the clock, the motor turned into a real turd. It wouldn't hold 65-70mph on the highway, burned a half a quart ever 4K, gas mileage was horrible (12mpg), and a few occasions when it was real cold out, the light knock at idle got so bad I thought a rod was going to come out of the block. I got rid of it.

I'd like to thank everyone who responded.
Here are the facts:
-Cobra drove 80 miles after rebuild from set odometer
-was 5 quarts low when I noticed it(checked oil drain plug)
-kid noticed oil gauge "not working" earlier in the break-in trip....he just
thought a sensor problem
-he really shouldn't own a car!
Not sure of:
-how far into trip he lost all 5 quarts
-by the time I got to inspect his car and we filled it up again, it would only
hold 5 quarts for less than 10 min. before it was all pured out under pressure
when the motor was running
-either the oil drained out all at first or the leak became worse

So he picks the car up and starts to put the 500 break-in miles on it and later that night comes by my house and I just happen to check his dip-stick and it is BONE DRY! We put a full 5 quarts in of the same Mobil 1 synthetic he had from the motor being rebuilt and noticed it puring out the bottom through a oil coolant line adaptor....anyways he still drove 80 miles without oil, but the motor still sounds and runs fine!!!!!!
ANYBODY HAVE ANY STORIES OR OPINIONS OF RUNNING THEIR CARS WITHOUT THE SYNTHETIC OIL...lets hear them
