Default Rocker tray direction?

Are the factory rocker trays directional? Or does it not matter?

I tried torquing the rockers down to the best of my ability, but a couple seem just a little off: they don't seem to be exactly centered over the stem (skewed a little to the left)

It's a trick flow head, so I had to grind off the locating tabs on the bottom....

Look at this picture and you'll see the orientation. The smooth part (back-side) of each tray face up. The furrows face down.

Pretty sure he's talking about the rocker stands, not lifter trays..

But I was thinking the same thing when he said "tray"

Do you have bronze guides in those TFS heads? If so, then stick to a roller rocker or you risk damaging the valve tips/guides

I had a few stock rockers that didn't center correctly from the factory. One reason of several I switched to an aftermarket rocker for my setup (bronze guides being the primary reason). Not sure how much yours aren't centered, but I did have some that definitely rode the side (fore/aft direction) of the valve stem and not in the center.

If it is one or two rockers, tray flipping the stand but installing the rockers in the exact same position and see if the rockers that are not centered move with the stand or remain those specific rockers. If it moves, than perhaps a new stand will solve the issue.

They're noticeably off. I did try moving some things around, but without much luck. I guess I could try new trays.

I noticed the rockers each have different stampings on the bottom, so I wasn't sure if they had specific locations they needed to stay in the motor too.

Here's what I have, from the passenger side. Some sit directly square, while others seem to be a bit left of the stem. I feel like the rocker should be square over the stem, no?

I tried holding the rocker tip with my fingers while torquing them, but when you get to 22ft lbs they just go whatever way they want.

I showed a couple of guys this so far, and they think that with a few heat cycles the rockers may straighten out.

Any body else have any input?

In all honesty, on pretty much every set of used rockers Ive seen, the wear pattern has never been perfectly center. I dont really see anything out of ordinary in those pics.

That's reassuring. I guess I'll just run them.

I've been holding off on buttoning everything back up, in case I need to pull it all out again.

It's possible. That those caged bearing trunions could b off a bit. 9/10 stick reunion rockers line up square over the tip.
Maybe its fine. Just pointing out a possibility w the aftermarket trunion upgrade.

I'm curious how the aftermarket trunions would affect it? Unless they're slightly different size than the factory?

You probably already know this but there is some side to side play in the rockers with the trunion upgrade. I thought there was something wrong but I have a spare set of rockers and the stocks also have side to side play.

Meaning along the bearing? Or does it pivot in the stand?

I'll have to check, but I think with the c-clips they hold pretty true.
