Not just if the shims were used, but that the one on the pressure side isn't upside down.

My line of thinking as well. A standard volume pump isn't going to help any if the clearances are big. A cheap AFM/DOD pump or a Melling 10296 or 10355 pump will may a difference though.

Gotta laugh a little when talking about bearing clearances in ten thousandths of an inch. At that point, you need to specify the ambient temperature at the time of measurement. a temperature reduction of 20 degrees F can cause a .0018 bearing clearance to open up to .0022. Also at those tolerances, you'd better measure the surfaces at multiple angles because the crank and bearings are never perfectly round either.
