Default overheating idle and 6th gear

my ls1 swap is having overheating issues, it runs fine but it starts to over heat when it sit/ idle, the fans kicks in but the temp still goes up, but when i start to drive it the temp goes back down. when i start driving it it does go down and nn the freeway when i get to the 6th gear the temp goes up to 220-230 so i downshift to 5th gear and goes back down. the ls motor is in a 69 camaro with 2.73 gear ratio. what ive done so far is i replaced the thermostat and still the same thing.

Did you get all the air out of the system? While its idleing leave rad cap off and see how it flows oncw thermostat open. This will also help purge system. Alot of people have a hard time getting the air out.How do youhave your steam ports setup? I found the best way to fill the system is to pull top hose and fill from there until your are almost full so you can connect hose. You will hear the air bubbles come out as you fill. It takes a little longer to fill but all the air will be out.

i filled it to the top then i started the car, then the coolant went down then topped it back up and drove it around shut it off then cooled it down and open the radiator and added more coolant. then i keep checking it and its still full. also when i have it idle and rev it a little the coolant goes up and starts to spill out.

Flip , I have never been able to get the air out just by filling the radiator .The only way I have been successful it to take the upper radiator hose off and fill from there while the steam line is disconnected . Once I started doing it this way I have never had a problem since . I would give it a try . I would bet you still have air in the system .

OP, here's what works for me every time --

Get the front wheels as high as you can, remove the cap, fill, run the motor, squeeze and release the passenger side radiator hose to help burp the air out there. As the motor runs, the radiator will start to overflow. Let it. Eventually, you'll get a big burst of air bubbles from the steam vent tube, and you'll see the level drop. Top it off and cap it. Then, completely fill the overflow tank - not just to the full line. fill it and cap it.

Do you have an underdriven crank pulley?

I can't see the pic of the steam port setup.

Fill the fluid with the car off if you open up the steam line and filling through the top radiator hose.

Depending on the condition of the motor, mileage and such, might have a defunct water pump, and idle/overdrive aren't high enough rpms to move enough water to sufficiently cool the engine. At higher speeds you have airflow over the radiator and rpms on the water pump both working for you.

Just a theory, but I don't know ****. Probably listen to these other guys.

The motor is out of a 2000 camaro mileage about 90k stock tune just deleted cats and have the temp set at 180. The fans from the same car and are controlled by the PCM, and the water pump is stock. Running long tube headers straight pipes

Did the overheating get worse over a period of time or happen suddenly? Fans turning the correct direction? Rich fuel setting at low RPM?

Heater hose ports on the waterpump hooked up and looping through a heater core or are they just blocked off at the pump?
They need to be hooked up into a loop of some sort. Be it running through a heater core or with the ports looped together with a short piece of hose bent into a 180*.

It's blocked off, no heater core, and not looped into 180 degrees that could be the culprit

How old is the radiator? A plugged radiator will do exactly what you are describing.
