head gasket question from a newb
K so what I got is a 98 LS1 block with the 4 inch crank and 6.125 rods and Wiseco pistons . I'm planning to use an 862 set of heads that ive not seen yet. These heads may or may not have "the notch".
I am road racing the car . No nitrous or boost. I'm buying gaskets now. I'm picking up the heads this saturday. I want to know if I'm safe to buy graphite gaskets no matter what. I am not boosting the motor or spraying it so a mls gasket is not needed . If these heads end up having the notch then my thinking is that no matter what the head is that I'm safe with the graphite gasket.
Is this a safe bet?

Why not wait until you've seen the heads before making a decision on gaskets? Even if it sets you back a few days, it would be better to run MLS gaskets if they'll work. You'll be glad you did if you ever have to remove the heads!

There is a notch built into early LS heads that is about an inch long (three inches if you're talking to your girl), 3/8" wide, and .080" deep near the #5 or #4 chamber, depending on which bank you're looking at.
Limits head gasket choices. If you google LS1 notched heads, you can see all kinds of cool pictures of it.
