Question Pistons reccomendation?

I've decided that rather than try to cram an LS1 into a $3k budget, I'm going to expand my budget to $5k but build it piece by piece. I want to have purchased my pistons by the end of this month, but I have no idea what to look for, as this is my 1st real project engine/car (LS1 in a POS fiero). eventually I want to be running about 500HP N/A. I was told to look at forged pistons, but I am completely lost as to what all the numbers mean, and what brands are more reliable than others.

oh, and I probably need connecting rods too don't I? :o

Dont just go and buy pistons if you dont know what else you are going to use...... everything goes togeather...... used togeather..... you have to answer what all are you going to do.
make sure the pistons work with the rods you want.... What heads are you going to use? are they going to be milled any to raise Comp.? The what cam are you going to use.. that again goes with what heads you are wanting to use.... then you have to think about P to V clearence. Call a few sponsors and ask alot of questions... research brands and lots of other things if this is your first build up.... i would hate for you to buy all those parts and them not work togeather like you wanted and waste your money.

what Na$ty-Ta says is correct, you must approach this from an educated direction. give us a call we can help you decide on what you should use.

wow. thanks for the post, it appears I'm a lot more ignorant of what's going into this engine than I realized- I thought it'd just be a matter of buying a bunch of parts and assembling them, none of this machine shop stuff and having to rebuild the actual block. also looks like I should lower my expectations to the 400-450HP range for my budget.

that being said I'm still undecided as to wether I'm going with the aluminum or iron block- it's just a matter of which I come across 1st (buying a used block to save on price). would they both use the same size (4.000?) pistons? if so that'd make my life easier on looking up heads and pistons that could be used along with maybe a stroker kit. suddenly the internals seem to be a lot harder to piece to gether than I thought (but I'm sure when this is all done in a year or so it'll be completely worth it). Also, gonna have to see if these gaskets will work on both the iron and aluminum block.

[edit] looks like I should decide on a crankshaft and heads before the pistons- any reccomendations of a good RELIABLE crank in the $1000-$1400 range? [/edit]

if you want to check out some good reading material, pick up "power secrets by smokey yunick" He goes through in good detail all the components and how they work together. I'm working on my first major n/a project as well, and I found this book to be one of the best i've read so far.

Also, this site is bad *** for getting help with what ever you're doing.

Good luck
