file fit rings gap problem
file fit rings gap problem I got some file fit rings from summit and I'm installing them into an ls1 block that has around 175xxx miles on it. I had it cleaned and honed. the problem that I found happed when I was measuring the gap of a ring inside one of the cylinders. I shined a flashlight into the bore and I could see light between the ring and the cylinder wall. will it tighten up when a piston is installed or does this mean my hone was done wrong. any body see a similar problem
Most likely your cylinders are worn egged shaped with the high mileage you have on the engine, only a fresh (bore) job will fix it . Take a bore gauge and check the cylinders for out of roundness. A hone job will not fix it.
Where exactly do you see the light ? Most likely its on the thrust side of the cylinder. And what over size rings did you get ? Most over size rings are .005"over bore. And what are you using to square the ring in the bore, and how deep are you checking the rings in the bore? And be carful with over honing the bores , it will cause piston slap.The LS1 engines are know for that on stock bore and honing will just make it worse. 175,XXX miles , is 7+ times around the earth lol.....

It needs to be torque plate bored 0.005" over (minimum or whatever it takes) like Randy says to make it round again, then honed. If you assemble it like it is now, you'll be doing it again. The machine shop that you used should have mentioned it.
