Ti valves, 918 springs& retainers with maybe 200 miles, .083 preload. Anybody else ever run into this?

That usually happens to titanium valves whenever they don't have a hardened tip and you don't use a lash cap.

But just exhaust valves? Intake valves look perfect. And they were delwest valves, which are supposed to have hardened tips. The machine shop I use said lash caps were not needed with these valves.

That's probably something you need to discuss with Del West and your machine shop. Again, the only time I've seen that is when the rocker contacts the titanium rather than a hardened tip or lash cap. Someone may have ordered a wrong part number for the exhaust or Del West may have been at fault themselves.
