Doesn't sound like rod knock to me, but it is definitely hard to tell with a video over the internet. Tones and volume change, but all rod knock I've ever heard was a lot louder and a much deeper tone.

Pull the valve covers. How's the oil look on the dipstick?

The oil is clean at this point. I need to get the car back home so I can start going down the collapsed lifter route. Should I pull the heads with the motor in the car or pull the motor out from the bottom? Either way, are there any good write ups left? Last i checked installuniversity was down and is ls1howto still around?

Try spraying some cleaner right down the push rod into the lifter before you take the heads off. Worth a try before pulling the heads.

It was a collapsed/destroyed lifter in the number 1. Had to do a new cam while we were in there. Thanks for the help gents!

At what mileage does everyone think about (or when it becomes a NECESSITY?) replacing the CAM bearings when replacing the cam??

Mine has almost 185K miles on it with a destroyed/collapsed/turned lifter or two which I am SURE have destroyed their respective cam lobes.

Is there ANY WAY possible to replace the cam bearings with the engine IN the car, and get them square/straight?

Yes I had to replace the cam. The collapsed bearing cut a groove into the camshaft and yes that sounds similar but mine wasn't running that rough. Only way to know for sure is to open her up. pull the heads and drain the oil.
