Exclamation Bearings/shavings found in center of crankshaft flange

I'm currently replacing the rear main cover and installing a new clutch assembly. After I got the old cover off, I noticed that there was some metal objects in the hole in the center of the crankshaft flange. I used a magnet and pulled out some metal shavings, ~12 objects that look like bearings, and a lot of metallic dust that stuck to the end of the magnet. Anyone know where these came from, and what my issue is? TIA.

That appears to be whats left of a pilot bearing. You need to replace your pilot bearing. Rent or buy a blind hole bearing puller and pull the remaining bits of your pilot bearing out. Then install a new pilot bearing.

While you are at it, check the crank end play!
If that **** got behind the end of the input shaft, it could well have caused a solid stack up, and a constant push on the crank thrust.

Does the input shaft of the transmission wiggle noticeably? If so, it's time to pull off the front cover & have a look @ synchros, front bearing & small bearing that seats into the input shaft. ATF doesn't offer much pressure protection under high loading for extended periods.

Once your synchros/blocker rings have been upgraded to post 00 or 02 trans type (not sure of the exact year that they were changed), switch to a GL-4 manual trans fluid.
