Default Oil Pump Failure with pics.

Here are some pictures of a Ported LS6 oil pump with less than 100 miles on it that failed on me causing it to spin the #1 rod bearing.

Anyone ever see a pump fail like this?

Installed a camshaft, springs, pushrods and ported LS6 Oil pump in a stock 00 LS1 that was installed into a 69 C10 pick. Drove the truck about 75 miles, took it to the dyno to get tuned and when I got it back from the dyno I took it out for a final test drive to calibrate the speedo and during the test drive it spun the #1 rod bearing. Oil pressure was good the entire time until is spun the rod bearing, which normally it would be around 30-35 at hot idle after it started making noise it was around 15-20 at hot idle. Only drove the truck about a mile back to the shop after it started making noise.

Talked to the vendor I bought the pump from and they don't think the pump was at fault but I don't think would admitted it if it was.

What method did you use to align the pump? If you had good pressure until the bearing went what makes you think it was the pump? I wouldn't think you would have a sudden loss of oil pressure unless something broke. I would think it would happen over several minutes if not hours/days of run time with a gradual drop in pressure. Could have been a contamination issue due to a failing pump though.

I would guess something happened to the motor to spin bearing that caused metal to go through that pump. I just dont understand how it fine then all the sudden goes bad. Have you pulled the motor apart?

Clearly it wasn't the pump that caused the bearing failure if it continued to build pressure even after that happened.

If you went from 30 down to 0 THEN heard the bearing noise, I would tend to agree with you in that the oil pump failed to deliver proper oil pressure thus damage happened. But if the oil pump kept building oil pressure throughout the whole ordeal what makes you think that was the culprit? Just because it has some marks on it?

These oil pumps are pretty solid I thought. I see the damage to the pump but could something have gotten into the pump to cause that damage? A spun bearing could make a mess of metal to do just that.

I also don't think it was the pump.

#1 rod bearing is pretty much the last thing to see oil pressure.

After the build and break-in, did you change the oil & filter?

Did you cut open the filter?

Sort of looks like the clearance between the center portion of the pump and the end plate/cover were too tight. Did it spin free prior to install?

Or maybe the pump was dry on start up?

Those areas obviously got hot at some point.
