Thumbs down 250 ft# my behind

So my day kinda sucked but is somewhat lucky. Pulled the small cam everything coasting good , put in the big stick. went to install the cam bolts and one snapps off. The head fell by the oil pump and I quickly got a magnet and got it before it ended up in the pan. So I blow an hr and. Half to scoggin dicky in Lubbock and get some arp bolts. Then I blow 30 bucks at lows on drill bits and easy outs. I get back and 1st stream of good luck. I screwed the bolt out with my fingers. So I get the cam installed, button up the rockers and move on to the balancer. All is going great till my homade install tool off eBay decided to twist off in the crank. I even had a roller bearing out of a real install kit and still managed to twist it off. Foutunatly there is about 3/4 of an inch sticking out but it's boogered. Wish me good luck in the morning. I plan to get a little larger nut and weld it on and pray I can back it out and finish this project. I had not one issue on the last swap and I even did springs then.....

Are you saying you tried to tightened it to 250 ft/lbs with an install tool?

You only seat the balancer with the install tool. Never torque with the install tool.

Default did not make 250

It twisted off well before I could hit 250. I could be miss understood but I thought it took 250 to seat it. Then you put the bolt in and got to 37ft lbs and Mark it. Then turn it another 140*. Please correct me if I'm wrong I'm fixen to go finish the install .

Sometimes they are a viable option, I installed my balancer with one with no problems. I would have rented one but the only places that rent them aren't any better than the E-bay tool and I just couldn't justify the cost of a new one for one use. You have to use your head and know the tools limits and your own I warmed the balancer and it slid right on and at no time did I feel I was at risk of breaking anything.

I think the OP must be related to popeye and doesn't realize he's using to much force or better get his torque wrench calibrated. How do you break a cam bolt off then turn around and break a huge balancer bolt/tool?

The first time I used it no problems. I'm not sure what the deal was yesterday

You seat it with the old bolt, not the install tool. The OEM is likely a higher grade than an ebay install tool.

For sure. Install tool is just that, to install! Then remove and install bolt and torque to 250 ft lbs.

You use the old bolt to torque down to 250 ft lbs. I never torque the old bolt that much. I go 150 ft lbs.
The ebay install tool is only threaded rod rod and isn't made for torquing.

Ok so I got the stick welder out, welded a nut to the tr and backed it out. Put the old bolt in and torqued it to 240 ft lb took another half turn. Then I pulled it out and followed procedure to stretch the new bolt. I used a smaller tq wrench when I broke the cam bolt. I then double checked my wrench before every other bolt to make sure it was clicking ( on the vice) any how I got it buttoned up and the sinister cam on a 110 lsa sounds bad a**. It actually ran pretty good, I'm assuming because my small cam tune was above stock. You can tell it need the injectors and a re tune tho. It is a lot more crisp and aggressive it seems. I have 42# injectors, racetronix fuel pump upgrade, 3800 billet stall and trans cooler to install, but looks like I'll have to wait till next days off....😜
