Is it a NA build, or a boosted build? I'd say a set of 243 or 799 heads would be good for a NA or nitrous build, but if your buddy is looking at building a boosted LQ4, a set of 317 castings seem to be the go to factory head.
I would try and find a set of 243 or 799 castings then. Plus, if he wants to, he could send them off to Advanced Induction, TEA, Livernois, Lingenfelter, etc. to be CNC ported.
