(SOLVED?)

I hate to promise and not deliver so I'm back! Had flu, food poisoning, tornados, floods so a little late but better than never.

Both the 5.3 and the 1x LS2 gears I have are nowhere near big enough.
They could be bored out by a competent machinist as the non-VVT single bolt and 3-bolt gears seems to have the same offset from the face of the cam.

The VVT bolt is hollow with perforations to let the oil out. I assume a non-VVT bolt will just plug it up and no oil should come out:

I was at AutoZone and had them pull a couple of stock replacement timing sets for 2005 Vette(1x 3-bolt). Hole in middle same as what I saw in my garage; too small:

Now it got interesting. AutoZone STOCKS a really nice-looking double roller with roller thrust bearing for $135. Might have front cover grinding to do to make it fit but it has provisions for 3-bolt cam AND the right-sized hole for the single bolt cam!!

And for what you might actually want to buy...also from Autozone, here is the same thing in a single chain for a little less $$. They say this one would take 3 days to come in from a different hub store:

So I think that's how you do a single-bolt cam with 1x cam gear!
I am sure Cloyes, Comp, etc. have more expensive variants of the above.
