Default Installing main caps

This is probably a really dumb question but...

How difficult should it be to reinstall the main caps? I finally got my ARP studs in and was going to throw the caps on before I brought it to the machine shop, but getting them to go all the way down into the block is extremely difficult. I can get them till there's about 1/4-1/3" of space, but they won't go any further than that.

shouldnt be that difficult.. if it doesnt go in with a dead blow then you are putting the mains incorrectly more than likely.

I haven't hit them with a dead blow or anything like that. Just tried pressing them in by hand. I'd seen videos online of people almost just setting them into place and thought something was up.

I know you can put the mains in backwards (I verified i wasn't). Is there anything else that can be done wrong? lol

Ive put together and taken at least a dozen engines and theyre much harder to take off than to put on, the main caps that is. Sometimes one side goes in first and gets stuck with the stud, try putting the cap level (im sure you're doing this already but some people dont) if it doesnt slide all the way down with some force / small taps from a dead blow then check for proper orientation, clean surface, proper bearing alignment in terms of tang orientation. Other than that, no idea other than to have the block checked.

Yeah. I do remember these were a ***** to get out, especially the number 3 cap.

It's going to a machine shop anyway, I'll try a dead-blow and see what happens.
