Default Previous owner of car says MS3 cam

But these are the numbers on the cam.

3728r/3731r HR113 +4

Previous owner says he didnt check PVC because TSP told him it didnt need to be checked. I am sure the spring install height wasnt checked either....didnt bother asking that.

Most I revved this car to was 6800 on factory tach about 5 times.

Can see where the exhaust valves have been hitting the pistons. 10 of 16 roller lifters are chewed up.

Your thoughts?

Remove cam and inspect it, check cam bearings.

Maybe open the oil filter and look for bearing debris..

Start there, if the cam is mangled up you might want to think about engine disassembly.

Your fault for not verifying yourself. Pistons look fine to me. Going to need a new cam, chain, and lifters regardless. Put something else in it, or flycut and call it good.

Not surprised, see guys looking for the biggest baddest sounding cam they can get their hands on not realizing how to correctly set up or what the consequences are for car performance.

Like stated in prior post, I would go smaller and replace parts setting things up correctly.

I bought the car already put together. This happened 300 miles down the road. Yes all will be checked and I will have a machine shop do a little flycutting on the pistons.

Post was just to have a discussion about the situation I am having to discuss with like minded and like interested people.

I have built a few motors all fords. I am new to ls engines though.

I noticed on the plastic lifter retainer cup deals that the lifters were very loose in a few of the slots but some of the lifters were still tight fitting in them if I keep the car which I haven't decided yet I may go with the link bar setup. The short time while it ran I did like the performance of the car so I wouldn't want a smaller cam.

I am not sure it was a MS3 cam either those lobe numbers dont equate to what what the MS3 specs are.

The guy I bought this car/motor from says he feels sorry for me but doesnt think it was a bad build. That I must have floated the lifters so badly I ruined the valve train. However he was still kind enough to donate 500 bucks to rebuild it stand up guy overall but maybe not the most tedious engine builder.

That is VERY stand up of him. Most people would have told you "sorry for your luck".....handing over ANY cash wouldn't have even been a topic of conversation. Consider this gesture miraculous.

Make sure you inspect that cam good as the lifter damage shown in the photo, at least IMO, would also do some damage to the cam lobes.

Ouch, that lifter looks terrible. What other parts were on the car, springs, retainers...? I dont think i would ever have rev'd my stockish LS1 to 6800rpms regardless of the cam if I did not know what else was in the car.

The previous owner does sound like a legit dude, however his mechanic skills could be a bit lacking.

Why don't you degree the cam to at least get a ballpark figure on what it's specs are?
