Default What cam?

Swapping in a 98 camaro LS1 in my 64 nova. Was thinking of maybe putting a cam in before I drop it in. It will have LT headers, your typical cold air intake and exhaust. Not wanting anything to crazy but would like something that adds a little power and a racy idle. Suggestions...

I was debating some sort of stall. This is my first time doing anything with an LS motor. So I'm not familiar with all the terms and what company's they relate to. Like 224/224,vrx etc. Who makes those cams? Stall wise Who are the best companies?

circle D is a sponsor you should checkout for a stall. reminder you must upgrade springs if you install a bigger cam. stock springs are the weakpoint on an ls1.

Give Cam Motion a call. They have experience with all of the above(from antique to ultra-modern) and can speak to you in terms that will bridge the gap in your experience from what you are familiar with(SBC?) to what you are headed into and help you understand the difference in camming requirements. They have many "shelf" grinds but will grind you a custom cam just for your setup as well for at or about same price.

I agree with above, 22x is likely where you will end up and stock LS1 springs are not good for anything larger than the stock cam. (and even that is debatable)

Trick Flow 228/230 112 LSA with PAC-1219 springs. Budget friendly.
Cam has made 400whp in an 04 LS1 with nothing but long tubes and a tune. Very street friendly. ~3000 stall would work good.

How do the rocker arms hold up on these motors? I've heard something about trunion upgrades? Also how much lift can you get away with before piston clearance becomes an issue?

Keep the RPM below 6600, rockers will hold up fine. Trunion upgrades are more for double springs and high RPM. Single Beehives and mild RPM won't hurt the stockers.

Good deal. I'll have to get to looking today. Got ALOT of stuff to order today. Hoping to have it all in by the first weekend in September. Wiring harness will probably be the hold up. Hopefully they can get it done fairly quick.

I've always had good luck with Yank converters, but any of the big names will be good. Circle D, Yank, FTI, PTC

I would call around to a couple different cam vendors and see what they spec out for you and compare them. Then pick the vendor that you like.

Martin Smallwood, Brain Tooley, Geoff Skinner, Pat G
