Default Good cam for LQ9

I am wanting to do a cam swap, in my 02 WS6 Vert. Something with good street performance and a SICK chop.

Motor: Pre - 04 LQ9
Heads: Stock 317
Lifters: OEM (original lifters)
Intake: LS6
Trans: 4l60e Modified
Torque Converter: FTI / 3200
Rear End: MWC FAB9 w/ 4.10 (IIRC... maybe 4.11)
Headers: Edrlbrock Vic Jr Drag
Exhaust: True dual straight pipes off the 3.5 collectors, into Purple Hornie glass packs, dumping before the axles

Why not call the cam vendors on here. They can get into greater detail with you

You can make a cam chop pretty hard easily by two things. Lobe separation angle and the tune also.... timing tables etc.... it's not all about duration for a mean sounding cam.

228/232 or 233/239 range would be solid options. You can go bigger but then you will start trading low-midrange power for a peak number and driveability will start to suffer.

Any idea on the weight of the car? Be careful not to go too large on the camshaft if you intend on keeping the 3200 converter. If you go too large on the cam and too tight on the converter the car isn't going to perform to its potential.

I'd go for the OG Streetsweeper profile. Hit up Ed Curtis.

Actually it has a lot to do with "cho" overap is what determines how a cam sounds for the most part. Overlap is determined by duration

I know ZERO about cam, but someone told me the lower the LSA (I think that's what its called, lol) the nastier it sound... something on the lines of a 103, I think I was told.

As for the weight, the only "weight reduction mod" I guess you can say Ive done, was replace the OEM Ram Air hood with a VFN pin-on BEAST hood... other than that, it's stock weight, 3517lbs.

Yes lower LSA and higher duration create more overlap which in turn gives it the more choppy sound

How to calculate overlap:

Example - 227/235 110 LSA

227+235 = 462 divided by 4 = 115.5 minus LSA (110) = 5.5 times 2 =11 (overlap)

I was thinking of just going with the MS3, but I read in a thread that that is old lobe technology... What is the new lobe technology?

If you plan on keeping the 3200 converter I would recommend going with something milder. Any camshaft that large is going to leave a lot to be desired performance wise if you plan on racing or taking the car to the track. A 3200 converter is way too tight for something that aggressive. I would recommend something high 220s low 230s duration for your application. If there is anything we can help you with don't hesitate to give us a call.
