Default LQ4 Questions

I have an LQ4 that I am putting the GM Hot Cam with the .525 lift. I was wondering if I could use flat tops with a set of lightly milled heads and not have any clearance issues.

You likely won't even be close to having issues.

Thanks, any idea how much can be taken off? Or what the compression ratio would be?

Which flat tops do you plan on using? Stock?

Guys running LQ9s and milled heads usually don't have PTV issues until .620+ lift or so. You shouldn't even be close.

With that particular camshaft you will have a decent amount of clearance to work with. What compression ratio are you trying to achieve? What cylinder heads are you planning to run? 317s? What pistons are you planning to run?

I'd like to get what I can out of the stock 317's. I'm going to use the lq9 flat tops. I'd like to get around 10.5:1 if possible.

With the LQ9 flat top pistons, stock thickness head gaskets, and heads milled .035 you should be right at your target compression ratio. Clearance should not be a problem with the GM Hot Cam, but it is always important to measure for proper clearance before final assembly.

Thanks for the replies! Much appreciated. Now to get it built and dropped in the foxbody. Lol

Has anyone done a similar build? I was curious on what kind of HP I could have. I'm topping it off with a Holley 750 Double Pumper and the MSD 6LS box to run ignition. I figured fuel injection would be a nightmare in the foxbody wiring.

Fuel injection isn't any harder in one car than another as far as wiring goes.

Yea, but I didn't want to fool around with finding a computer and trying to tune everything right. Plus, I'd rather have a carb. Any idea on what kind of horsepower?

I too am running a LQ4 with stock 317 heads for the time being, can't wait to either have these worked on or go with some aftermarket higher compression ones...my combo so far as been 11.27 @ 118 this weekend, I cannot believe the potential these engines have with a little tuning.
LQ4, MS4 cam, Holley Intake, 650 Holley Carb, Stock bottom end (so far).

Super Chevy made 470 HP with a 6.0 with L92 heads, GM Hot cam, and a carb. Subtract about 30 HP to get numbers with stock 317s.

That was gross HP rating though, as measured with no water pump or accessories. It DID have cats on the exhaust though.

GM Hot cam is a baby cam though. Very good cam for a mild carb setup with that narrow LSA. I typically run a .560-.600 lift cam in the stock engines thanks to spectacular head flow and stock valve train.

Wow, that's really impressive. I spent a lot of money on the 302 I have now and it's just weak compared to a built LS. Which a 6.0 has more displacement, but I'm ready for a swap. There's none around here. Lol

I read that, really impressive for a stock GM head. I thought about running a Texas Speed 224 cam, but the lift is 600. Feels a little too big for not as much air flow.

I put a 226/232 .590/.600 in a stock 5.3 a month ago and it pulled VERY strong up top. The GM Hot cam is fairly small for a performance oriented 5.3.

Is that a custom grind?

No. There are probably 1000+ shelf grinds for the LS engines sitting out there.
