Default 4.8 Turbo Questions

Hello this is my first post on the forum!

I got a 2004 1500 pickup on trade. It has a completely stock 4.8 and a full turbo kit from on3performance. Its currently running 8psi.

I really like the truck. My question for you guys is, whats next? Id like to make more power with the truck. Whats my best route?

Cam, valvesprings and a boost controller will be next on the list. You will, of course, blow up your 4l60E.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I will head over to the link you replied.

Any recommendations for the valve springs i should use? I believe this is the 3rd 4l60 in the truck, what could i do to beef it up?

As far as miles, this set ups been ran for about 15k now. I took the trade from a good buddy of mine. He works for on3performance. This particular block has had multiple set ups on it. They even designed the new TT set up on this block from what ive heard. Still sokid and holding strong.

Thanks for the info, ill check out those vendors asap.

How much boost is safe on a stock 4.8? I dont mind building it internally to run big boost if necessary. I have some cash put away. Just seeing how much im going to need to spend.

On a good tune you can turn up the boost until that turbo chokes. However, with stock heads/cam, I doubt you get much more than 500rwhp. The stock bottom end can handle much more. At some point the ring gaps will need to be opened up, or you will break a ring land when the ends butt together.

With stock heads and cam, he can't handle more than 500? Lol what are you smoking.

The motor will handle far more than that. The problem is airflow. Look up old threads of people pushing totally stock 4.8 motors to the limit. With stock heads/cam, they seem to choke out at around 500rwhp. Some of these were with over 20#s of boost. With a good top end people have made over 1000rwhp.

Head flow becomes almost negligible on a boosted 4.8. You don't increase CFM demand, only pressure, CFM stays the same. If anything, adding boost increases CFM that a head flows.

There is a bone stock 4.8, stock cam, valve springs, headers gaskets, etc, pushing over 800 wheel through an automatic cutting 1.1 60 foots in a G Body.

The problem is people using turbos like the small turbine On3 and GT45 thinking it'll be in its efficiency range on a stock cam 4.8, so at 18 PSI it's only making 450 wheel through an auto. Those same setups with a Borg S475 usually end up making 600+.
