Do i have to remove the front cover ?

Do i have to remove the front cover ? Can it really be true that i need to remove the front cover to remove the damn oil pump pickup tube bolt at the oil pump end of the tube?
GM has been so kind to place it up close to the front cover so i cant reach it with any tools. Or so it seems. What did you guys do?
Drop the front cover?
If so, i might as well do a cam swap while im there. Hot cam preferrably. Just too damn expensive!

i have seen techs in a dealer do it to save time but it was really tedious trying and if you drop the bolts might be pulling the pan- can be done but not fun-they modified a wrench and used a swivel socket I believe
