Default Ticking

Anyone have the ticking noise and find out what it was? Changed my lifters so I know it's not that. It comes and goes as I'm driving and increases with the rpm's. It's not the piston slap, sounds like something in the valvetrain. Any help is appreciated.

Could it be an exhaust leak? Or an ignition ARC?

I was talking about a bad wire, or possibly cracked coil? Just thinking on the keyboard.

Could be air getting into the oil too, that will cause the lifters tick. Try this....when you hear it ticking pull over shut off the engine and pull the dipstick. Look for tiny bubbles, lots of them. Some bubbles in the oil is normal BUT lots of tiny bubbles means you are getting air mixed into the oil.

Another thing that will cause your NEW lifters to tick is dirt in the oil. If the old lifters ticked because of dirty conditions inside the engine the new ones will tick too.

Small air leak someplace in the pickup tube assembly, could be at the oring too. Before the oil is gets pressurized even the smallest tiny tiny break in the oil delivery to the pump will get air forced into it and high crank case pressure while driving will make it even worse. Mine would start tick after going up a long grade, I'd get to the top TICK TICK. After it idled for a few mins it would quiet back own. oring was letting air in. If the oring leaks it doesn't leak oil it lets air leak into the oil going into the pump.

I had a tick that I could not find as well, I knew it was in cylinder #6 from using a mechanics stethoscope. I did just about everything from oil pump, trunion upgrade, exhaust leak, pushrods, ect. So I decided to to a cam upgrade with new lifters and pp. the stock heads. When I was lapping the valves I noticed the intake valve on #6 would not turn in the seat. When I pulled the valve and rolled it a flat surface it was bent. Sure enough it had kissed the piston on a over rev from a missed shift. I replaced the valve and the tick is gone.

Was the ticking from the valve continuous or would it come and go?

It would tick before oil pump went out. Ticks after replacement, that's why I thought it might be the lifters. There is no loss of power but could the top end not be getting enough lubrication? Also, would this damage the engine? I can drive at highway speeds with it ticking, then make a left turn and the ticking stops. Its not continuous.

Is air in the oil going to keep the engine from being properly lubricated and damage any components or can it be driven without worry?

I drove mine for 75k with air bubbles without any trouble. Dealers claimed it was "PISTON SLAP" I finally heard enough and added TransX auto trans seal conditioner to the engine oil and its been quiet ever since, At 140k now.

You put this in with your oil? Is this a joke or something?

The tick would come and go and it would vary on how loud it was, but I could always hear it with the stethoscope.

No I'm hot joking.....the effin dealers blame every noise on piston slap. The effin oring was leaking air in. How long do you think a crappy cheapo factory oring in nasty azz motor oil lasts? Maybe 4-5 years before its toast. The TransX swells the oring and cleans the lifters internals. I put in 3-4 ozs every other oil change. I also add ATF to the engine oil, a WHOLE QUART if the lifters are getting loud because these short skirt piston dump way too much crap from combustion into the oil. gotta clean it out somehow and it doesn't hurt a dam thing, been doing this for over 40 years. I'm not a novice or a newbee like you kids today call it. I know JACK. LMAO
