Default A completely subjective cam question

I know this is a question that everyone has a different answer for, much like header and exhaust choice. I want to put a 224/224-112 cam or even one of the new 225/225-112 in my car. I have to keep in mind that someday in the next two years or so I will be back in CA where the car is registered and will need to pass the sniffer test again. What is my best bet going this route? G5X3, TR, TSP, guide me oh wise ones of the LS1 internals...

For CA TR224 114 is on the edge of passing. I have a comp 224/224 .581 112 and with LT's and strait pipes it sounds like nascar at full throttle, but at idle a mild lope

So, then the 225 would be a no chance type of cam? What if I go to 114 would the help or hinder?

I think it mostly depends on ramp rates (and LSA), once you get over 220-or-so degrees of duration.

A very lazy 220/220 114 could fail the sniffer, while a very quick 225/225 114 (maybe higher) may pass.

The TR cams have very quick ramp rates... and low overall duration.

Does anyone know of an exact degree of overlap, maybe at advertised and .050 duration, that would be a cut-off point for emissions?

The more I think about it, I think that's what it all comes down to.

Yeah, it comes down to overlap...I've seen 228 cams pass sniffer tests with the proper tuning. I'd go no bigger than a 225/225 114 if I had to pass a CA sniffer though.

The more negative degree of overlap the better chance to pass.
A 224/224 114 = -4
A 224/224 112 = 0
A 225/225 112 = -1
A 225/225 114 = -3
The 224 114 would have a better chance (these are aproximate calculations)

So I could get away with 224-114 or 225-114 at best. That leads to another question of which company makes the quick ramp rate that would be the best for me? I would like to improve my 1/4 mile time (who wouldn't) but I want it to sound the way a Camaro should on the street, I also am getting into SCCA again and this Camaro will be the one set-up for it. So excessive power although fun, is not totally neccessary.

Comp XE-R lobes are about the most aggressive available. An off the shelf XER 224/224 .581 .581 114 would be a great candidate. The TR224 runs a close second, IMO...slightly less lift at about .560". You can even find these cams used on here for under $300, since lots of people are into "big" cams. You'll get a nice lope at idle with minimal "cam issues".

Don't really want to sound stock. Would like a more aggressive roar, but still able to pass. I could care less is if you can hear me 3 states over.

roar will come from idle setup and exhaust. SS II has a little lope. Check MTI site>>>>> There is a soud clip on a vette.
