Default High Mileage LQ4 worth it?

I have found a few high mileage 2005+ 6.0 LQ4 motors one with 215k and the other with 220k miles. I was quoted $1,500 for one of them complete pull out ecm, harness and all. Is this too much for this motor with this many miles? I know at least it will need a new set of rings and a slight hone. Looking to boost it.

thats high in my book, but the market varies from place to place. junk yards will charge the absolute maximum the market will afford.

Thank you truckdoug. Would you think the crank and rods would be okay? I have a very reputable performance shop that could do a light hone with new pistons, rings, and bearings. What are you thoughts?

well lots of people just run them as-is, especially if it's a motor you've seen run and can verify oil pressure.

I like to have a "peek at the turkey" and check the bearings and rings out. Especially if it has sludge under the valve covers. Thats kind of a tattle-tale sign it was not given an easy life--i.e. infrequent oil changes, malfunctioning PCV system, no coolant changes etc.

It's really up to the individual to decide how much work an engine should get.

For me, I am learning to tune a turbo'd motor so some engine damage is gonna be a real possibility so it's easier to replace the motor than keep rebuilding them fresh each time.

You'll love a turbo 6.0. Imagine a car that hits almost as hard as your CBR! It's so much fun.

You could buy a whole vehicle for a little more and be able to hear it run, then part out what you don't need and make money back.

I bought a wrecked envoy with 211k and an lm4 for $1500. I ended up with money in my pocket after keeping the engine, harness, and ecu. Bonus, I was able to hear it run and "drive" it around the guys yard.

Seems a bit pricy to me. Do you have any local yards that have a flat fee for parts where you pull them? I found an '03 savanah van and pulled the entire motor, trans, wiring, etc. with 330k+ for under $400 and sold off everything minus the block and made a profit. I pass up a few 6.0s and a ton of 4.8-5.3s in these yards all the time. They are gambles since you cannot hear them run, but I would make sure that they turn over. I didn't, got it home and with an 8' bar and 200# person sitting on the end it wouldn't budge. I got lucky and the block was fine. If you are willing to take the heads off at the yard to check the cylinder walls and then just loosely bolt them back on after, you will get the heads for the same price with the pullout if you just left them behind.

I have a several salvage yards around me...Some of them the motors/trannys are already pulled so I cant hear them and 1 of them I have heard run. The 1 that I have heard run had 215k miles on it. The motors that have been pulled I asked if they knew how many miles were on them and none of them knew.

I would look elsewhere, the price is steep. Especially for the mileage.

Try Craigslist. I just glanced locally for me and there are 2 complete. One for $500 and one for $800. If you are not planning on opening up and are just going by sound, you will pay more. If you are willing to open it up a bit and look it over, it will be cheaper.

Hey Blackduk98. I have been looking it seems like everywhere. I haven't found much on craigslist here in the Houston area, but hopefully will come across a decent setup soon.
