Weird grinding noise
Weird grinding noise I cranked my fresh 6.0 for the first time ever. I hear a weird grinding sound coming from the passenger side. I already replaced the starter thinking it was bad or needing to be shimmed or something. But found out they don't need to be shimmed. I put the new starter and still has the same weird grinding sound. I checked the torque converter bolts and fly wheel. They have absolutely no marks to indicate that they were rubbing on anything. I also confirmed that the converter bolts are the same size as the other ls converter my brother has.
I called the machine shop who assembled it for me. They said that weird noises are common. That it might be the Rings settling into the cylinder. I don't think that's it. Maybe you guys have had the same issue or might know what it might be or if it's normal.

Put a socket on the crank bolt and turn the engine over by hand. If it turns smooth and even I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like starter-gear noise to me, could varying because the teeth clearance is not even all the way around the flex plate.
I have turned the crank using a socket and wrench. it is a little tough. I don't hear anything binding or hitting.
Starter noise does make sense. But I've already changed the starter and it's still making the same exact noise.
I'm going to try a 3rd starter today. I hope it doesn't have the same noise.

It wouldn't be the starter but the run out on the flex plate itself. A new engine should turn over fairly easy but more importantly it should feel even as you turn it. You could with the plugs out pull the rockers and push rods then crank it and see how it sounds and feels.

Well I figured out the problem. Stupid me for not noticing it sooner. BENT FLY WHEEL. I was under the car while my brother was cranking it.
Are the fly wheels interchangeable between 5.3 and 6.0? I'm going to try to find one at the junk yard.

So are all the flat plate plates the same and the curved ones the same? I think I have a flat one. So if I find any flat one at the junk yard. It will work. Does it matter if it comes off a 5.3 or smaller. Or does it have to come off a 6.0
OK. Just so that I'm clear. The curved flex plate only come behind 6.0 or 4l65e or 4l80 Trans.
The part number that I have on my flex plate is 12563136. My brother has one off his 5.3 4l60e 12580709. So that one won't work for me?
