Default rebuild LS6 or swap to LS3?

Hey all,

I Have a 68 camaro with an 2003 ZO6 LS6 engine. The guy who built it went carbureted bit of a weird set up. Engine only has 5k miles on it from rebuild. I Dino'd it and it came in at 330 at the flywheel, it's also burning some oil which makes me think it wasn't built right. It runs great but seems to be Underperforming for what the engine should put out. Car is fully re built in great shape and I intend to keep it long term. Question i have is should I rebuild the LS6 with some internals to get it over 400rwhp or swap it out to an LS3 and move to a newer set up.

Let me kmow your thoughts

Depends on your budget. Rebuilding the LS6 to 400rwhp would not be a difficult task (nor an expensive one), especially if all it needs is a light hone and maybe some new rings. That being said, could be that the motor needs an entirely new rebuild.

My suggestion would be to do a quick teardown on the LS6 and see what kind of condition the motor is in. If all looks good and just needs a bit of clean-up, upgrade some parts and run the hell out of it. If it looks like it needs a full rebuild, sell it and use that money to get an LS3.

BTW, Auto or manual trans?

LS3

Why not get a newer motor in better condition? Besides, for similar HP, a less highly tuned larger displacement engine is just better than a temperamental lower displacement setup. That's why I sold my LS1 and decided to go LS2 for my 240SX rather than just dropping a 'small' cam in my LS1 (which, by the way, also had issues).

Rebuild the ls6 as well.....bring the compression upto 11.1:1 and slide in an asa cam and call it a day!!!!......I did that to a '99 lm7 changed out the dished pistons for 4.8 flat tops and added an asa cam.....with your ls6 style heads...man that motor definitely feels alive with over 400hp.....

That would be the one on the left...... $400 ebay lm7 that i have under $1500 into that now lives between the framerails of a 68 chevy c10. That im soon gonna sell......

Rob, did you rebuild the LS6 or go with the LS3? Just wondering which direction you choose. Thanks
