Is this normal to have wear like this?

With an OEM gear, yes. It shoudn't be too deep into the metal though. Basically just the black phosphate coating gets worn off.

is that a used cam plate on a new build? I see oil maybe, but that could be assy lube also.

​​​​​​ there isn't a Groove, it's just the coating wore off. Thanks for the input just wanted to double-check.

is there a problem reusing the plate? The motor only had 32,000 miles on it when I tore it apart. And you are correct it is assembly Lube.

A new one is only $18 why reuse it? that seal can only be compressed once really. its what seals off the front lifter gallies from leaking. Plus it wears on both front and back.

As I recall there is an inspection procedure in the manual for re-using the cam plate that includes inspection of the gasket on the back of the plate. If you go with a new plate, I would get one that is the same as the original and not use the newer tapered bolt design from GM that replaced it.
