Default LQ4 cam selection

I'm building a 2001 lq4 for a street rod project. The bottom end is getting honed, new rings, bearings etc. I'm using the stock 317 heads. I'm only looking to get about 400-425 hp. The car will weigh about 2500lbs. I'll be using a 4l60e as well. I need some help deceiding what cam to use. Would the tsp 228r be a good choice? Any other ideas? Thanks

400-425 flywheel or at the wheels? If at the wheels, a good set of heads with a mild port job plus a cam like you suggest, or something with some duration split like a 222/228 should wake it up and have a slight lope.

400 at the crank is what I'm thinking. I think I could hit that pretty easily with the stock heads. I see a lot of people happy with the 228r cam and I seen a new one for sale in the classifieds. That's why I am thinking about that cam. But, if there's a better choice out there I'm open to that as well.

I also talked to comp cams and they recommended their 54-444-11 which is 581/588 224/230 114. Real close to the 228r. I don't know how much different one would be from the other.

The one you mention might have a 228 duration on both intake and exhaust. A common thought on LS engines is they like a little more exhaust duration than intake. Most cams for LS engines are this way. The cam Comp recommended would run very well. Not to diss Comp, but you might call Cam Motion, Texas Speed, Engine Power Systems(EPS), Tick Performance, among others, for a cam recommendation. These guys are LS specialists and will help you get the right cam, even a custom grind if necessary, as they usually do not cost extra. Best wishes on your build!

400 at the crank is easy. You want a good driveable cam with a nice idle and lope and no need for a stall converter, check out our new high lift hot cam.
Right now they are on sale for $500 for cam and springs. It reuses stock pushrods to keep an essy budget OR upgrade your pushrods and the kit is $565. Made 385 on a 99 fbody with ls6 intake and full exhaust so im sur itll get you pretty close to or right at 400 at the wheels.

Here is a bit more info

^^^^THIS^^^^^^^
This slipped my mind even after reading about it here for the last few weeks!
It will wake up the LQ4. Over 400 crank, even likely at the wheels as stated above.
Plus these guys have the nice prices!

WS6 store, I emailed the store a couple of days ago for a price on an engine kit but I haven't heard back. How long is the high lift hot cam on sale for? What lifters do you recommend for it? Thanks
