Default 6.0l knock

i am terrible at diagnosing problems. can fix them if i know the problem but cant figure out how to find out what the problem is

just got a turck 2004 chevy 6.0 167k miles
has a knock. if i had to guess rocker arm is stuck or lifer is stuck

my boss the previous owner said it was run for a little with no oil.
only CEL is a random cylinder misfire

hopefully not a youre fucked you need a whole new engine type thing.

sorry guys dont know how else to attach the video. there is no viruses. so dont worry. please help

OK, 167K miles, ran without oil for a ??? period of time, has a knock. A lifter is more of a tapping sound than a knock. The rockers have needle bearings, and rarely seize(CAN happen though...). My suggestion is to remove the valve covers to eliminate valvetrain problems. If there is a stuck rocker you WILL see it, or a stuck lifter. IF nothing is seen upon rocker arm inspection while running, then a full teardown is called for.

not completely sure how long it ran without oil, not long enough to seize pistons. he could have been exaggerating and just saying very low oil not 100% sure,

yes this weekend i will remove the valve cover. a full tear down will not happen with that type of miles i will just throw a used engine in and call it a day

OK, sounds reasonable, though this engine might not have suffered much. Might just need the crank turned and new bearings, plus oil pump, etc.

i took the head cover off real quick..push rods are fine. rockers are fine. the only thing i saw was one of the push rods had a little maring on it... that was cylinder 4 on the exhaust side. i guess if i want to dig deeper i could take the head off and check the intake and exhaust valves. i dont think it has anything to do with the crank, oil pump or bearings. im just trying to get a couple thousand miles out of it..until i can find a new engine.

i can turn a crank but putting new bearings in is basically the same amount of work as putting a whole new engine in just a bit cheaper if i do it myself

Well if you turn the crank you WILL need new bearings. Maybe find a used engine to get you by while you do a righteous job of rebuilding the present engine for long term use.

I just want to clarify. You are saying it's the bearing where the piston can next to the crank? Because to me it sounds like the noises coming from up top not bellow

Your second sentence is not clear. If the top end valvetrain parts all check out, including the lifters, check out the timing chain/sprockets for slop in the chain. If it all checks out, it has to be in the bottom end.

It doesn't sound like knock, more like a valve train related problem. My old Trans Am engine sounded just like that when the rocker spit the needle bearings out.

If you have the valve covers off, snap a few pics for us and post them. Look for loose pushrods or rocker arms and check every one of them, even the back ones. Since it was run low on oil, it might just be a collapsed lifter.

I agree with KCS, definitely in the valvetrain.

i checked push rods and rockers they all seem pretty tight. all needle bearings look intact all about have the same amount of play

not sure how to check the lifters. i know i have to pull the head then just pull out the lifters and inspect?

ok i noticed 2 things...the 3rd lifter from the back is actually shooting oil off the spring and the 4th lifer from the back oil is pooling up on top of the rocker arm. not sure if this is a problem but its just a difference im seeing

I wouldn't change them, Id simply clean them in place without pulling the heads.
