My '00 SS has a 220º/220º .581"/.581" XER cam with 112º lsa installed +4º. It also has an A4 trans and stock t/c. The exhaust system is completly stock including exhaust manifolds. the car sailed through the Cali smog test recently. Also, my '01 Silverado has a 214º/214º .560"/.560" 112º lsa cam and it also sailed past the test only exam.
Earlier this year I watched a Berger ZL-1 Camaro with the rare 427cid breeze through the Cali smog test. These cars are equipped with cams with over .600" lift and duration over 236º@.050". It also had the GMMG LT headers, high flow CATS and sewer pipe for exhaust. (I don't see LT headers hurting emissions therefore if the smog tech ignores their presence, you got away with SOMETHING).
What I'm trying to point out is that the onboard computer through the closed loop system is capable of correcting the a/f ratio under medium load conditions so to achieve stoich a/f ratio and therefore a clean tail pipe. Some daring individuals have passed their states emissions test without CATS using long cams with narrow lobe centers.
PCM tuning may or may not be required dependng on exact cam profile.
Hope this helps..........
Good luck,
Richard
The idea being that the extra exhaust backpressure would negate some of the scavenging effects of overlap.
Overlap is what fails emissions, right?

Yeah I guess with tuning, anything is possible.
But I'd personally have a higher duration cam on a 114, then a smaller one on a 112 for smog purposes. Just adding the I have seen multiple people not pass with a 112 LSA, I haven't seen one person fail with a 114. Again, if it were me 114 would fall under the better safe than sorry category, but to each his own.
This is an interesting topic guys. I appreciate all your ideas and input on this one. Any test results are gladly welcomed.
Richard
