We use a .600 lift now as we redesigned the lobe of the 224R cam that we sell. The original 224 .581 was a lobe that belonged to comp cams. Our new lobes were designed to be easier on the valve train when opening and closing valves. As it turns out that 224 redesign had a .600 lift to it.

I wouldn't say one is more popular that the other, the .600 lift is just an improved version with different valve events.

As far is it being outdated, I would say no. The 224 was a proven cam and has been since the early 2000's when it became popular. It was popular because it fit the need for a great cam that picked up good power throughout the band and didn't cause much in the way of drivability issues. While we test new grinds everyday, sometimes the 224R cam is just the right fit for certain vehicles. It responds well to cathedral ports, but would not be a good choice for an LS3 or square port.

Why do people continue to use the 224r even after 10 plus years of it being out? Was the cam profile ahead of its time? I didn't realize how long it has been out and it still produces good numbers.

I wouldn't say it was ahead of its time or anything like that. There were a few other cams that were somewhat similar, and they were good for people who wanted great drivability with a nice flat powerband with a modest bump in power

Wouldn't the TSP 224/228 be a better choice vs the 224/224?

224r is a great mild cam that will have good street manners. And easy to tune. Also good on the rest of the valvetrain, as mentioned. Who really cares how old it is lol
