Opinion on LQ4 setup
New to ls engines, been doing alot of research and this is currently what I'm thinking about puttin together for my daily driven ext cab sonoma. Will be pairing the engine with a 4l80e.
Stock bore/stroke 02 LQ4, Gen 4 rods, wiseco junkyard dog +9cc pistons, nnbs intake and warr tb, TSP 228/232 112lsa cam kit and 317 heads.
Thoughts? Opinions?

I was looking at going with the wiseco pistons to bump the cr up instead of a head swap since I eventually want to boost it but that'll be a few years. Truck will have 3.73 gears and a 3k stall. From what I've read those pistons should make the combustion chamber about the same size as if I went with 243/799's.
Part # for the pistons I'm talking about is K0044XS.

I have that same cam in my f body on a stock bottom end 2002 lq4/243 headed combo, through a 4l60 and ls6 intake with a 10 bolt made 425rwhp. 3760 pound car at race weight netted me 11.80's on motor with precision 3500 stall. Its a fairly small cam but streetability is awesome, doesn't act any different then stock. Responded very very well to nitrous later. And I've since added a fast 92, unsure of actual number power gains but it pulls much harder in my opinion.

If i was u i would run a flat top wiseco instead of the domed piston. U can thin add 243 heads to get arround ls2 compression of 10.9:1
Thin if later on u want to go boosted u can sell the 243s add the 317s back on and have around lq9 compression of 10.0:1 for boost. With this u want need to change pistons or your bottom end combo just heads.

Haven't thought of doing that honestly. Is there any specific flat top you would recommend? And with that cam, would I be ok with just doing the trunion upgrade? So many conflicting stories on that particular topic its hard to find a definitive answer.

You could get by with the trunnion upgrade, but honestly, with that much lift(.600, right?) I would seriously consider the TSP roller-tip rockers. They would be much easier on the valve tips than OEM rockers. That much lift puts the very tip of the rocker digging into the valve more than lesser lift cams. Just my .02.

stock rockers will do fine. U can add the trunnion upgrade if u choose. I have used a lot of diff cam and engine combos and have never installed trunnions into any of my rockers.
I would just order a flat top piston in any brand of forged piston that is up to pare. Wiseco, JE, diamond, etc. Call up a sponsor like texas speed and see what they suggest.

Been looking into flat tops for several hours now and I can't seem to find any that would work with the stock gen 4 rods I just picked up for this build. Closest I've found were wiseco -3 or -6, can't remember, junkyard dog line but I don't think those would bump the cr enough. Not looking to have to bore it out if I can avoid it, but if I do then oh well.
Life happened so I'm gonna have to just stick with changing pistons and throwing in the 224r cam I've had sitting around for now. But would like to be able to build off of what would already be in the motor when funds allow it to happen, plan on getting a bigger cam though.
So can anyone post up a link to some pistons that will work with what I have?

Check out ws6store.com they have a good selection of pistons for stock rods if on a budget build they can also get out a complete rebuild kit with gaskets and bolts with flat top pistons with no valve reliefs for $700 also you can check out D.S.S racing pistons I believe the model number is 1830bx they are -5cc forged pistons for 6.098 rod for $489 or so but would still need rings

I currently run a 6.0/ljms stg2 turbo cam/799 heads/LS6 intake/42# injectors through a 4l65e/3:42's with a Yank SS3600. I am going boost as soon as I can. My C/R is right at 10.5:1. I plan on running E85 as a Flex and Meth as needed.
Currently, the truck runs 12.23's with a 2.1 60' on a unprepped track. I have no doubt it will make me happy with the wick lit.
