Default E85 and plug temps

Hey all,

What kind of effect does E85 have on plug temp ranges? Every time I check my plugs (TR55s @.050), they are nearly immaculate and look brand new making it difficult to judge if they are the right temp. I occasionally get knock sensor codes and am trying to rule everything out.

Anecdotal ,, I converted a Dwarf car with a Air cooled 1200 GSZr motor in it from race gas to methanol, it dropped the head temps on a 1/8 oval run from about 500+ to 238, cooled it enough I had to start pre-heating the oil to get the motor to come up to full temp..

Ethanol isn't quite as radical,, but its significant, the nascar engine guys got a huge power win in tuning once they got injection to go with the alcohol..

Compression Ratio will also play a factor in plug heat ranges as well, with or without using E85.

Seems as though not to many people realize this. I started running tr6s NA because I have more compression than stock, and my car seems to love them.

Thanks for all the info. I am at 11.5:1 so I think TR6 will be in the near future.

be getting plug coloring w/ E85.
If they are looking "new" and the knok sensors are active, it may well be you are running very lean. What is the AFR?

Default E SP Reading

Hi 98ss, YES and I agree with your report, a "hard read".

Send a quality picture, I can read the steel.

Your Knock sensors should be working correctly.
AS for "Old Geezer" tech, LEAN is ABOVE 1.00 Lambda/Rich is BELOW that value.

Commanded AFR is 10.09
Bottom plug has 500 miles, top two are from old build.

Trims are +/- 2%

With todays fuels and oils, it's very difficult to tune an engine by reading the plugs. If you're drag racing, you need to put in new plugs, shut down the engine at the end of the track, and then get towed back to the pits. That's the only way to get a clear reading.

One of the big advantages to alcohol is that it burns very clean. Chambers, valves, etc, all stay very clean. What you're seeing on the plugs is very normal for alcohol. You need a data logger to make sure your tune is correct.
