Cam choice for a stock LQ9
Hot Cam specs 219/228@.50 .525/.525 lift 112 LSA
A friend put this cam in this 99 SS Camaro and back in 2001 it failed the sniffer test and his car failed emissions repeatedly. He finally ended up selling the car due to the failed smog test issues. The hydrocarbon count was too high even with cats and tuning. With today's much better tuning it might help but I would want to find someone thatschad a hot cam pass the same emissions testing routine your car will face. The 112 LSA is hurts the sniffer test.
A 224/224 114 LSA will normally pass a sniffer test with a good tune in a LS1.
If you want to drop hydrocarbon emissions you can change the timing and afr in the areas that a clayton etc dyno would run. most of the time its idle and then some smooth accel and decel and not aggressive so WOT/PE isnt even an issue.
I helped on the GM Challenge X project with their hydrogen fuel cell equinox and we did so many drive cycles on the mustang dyno with the sniffer hooked up it was ridiculous.
If you have NOx issues then just turn the timing down to decrease cyl temps/heat and put a cooler stat in.

What kind of use will the truck see? Daily, pulling trailer, street toy with an occasional trip to the drag strip?
What is he willing to spend on springs, and will he be willing to change springs down the road? How many miles does the truck see a year?
I am tempted to drop some 243s I have sitting around on my '01 2500HD. It is a daily which does pull a car trailer from time to time.

Have you ever seen or actually heard of someone testing their springs on the reg even with super aggressive cams unless something happened?
No need to worry here.
