What do you mean by shim? Are you trying to gain more clearance for your timing chain? I have the Roll Master double timing chain, it came with aluminum shims to give you clearance for the crank sprocket and chain. You just remove the oil pump and install the new chain and put the shims in between the pump and the block. I used some gasket maker on the shims to prevent oil seaping.

I did it (well, I was handed the parts by the expert) when I blueprinted my oil pump on my old SBC. Shim it too much, and your psi goes too high, which is a bad thing. From what I gathered, fileing down the burs and such on the gears was more important for increaseing volume-flow and increasing longevity of the pump.
