Default Milling 317's for LQ9? LS1/LQ9 dilemma, long post

Ok, so I purchased a complete LQ9 for a turbo project, but decided after mulling it over I would find an aluminum Siamese bore 5.3l....which I have now.

In any case, since my car is going turbo I figured I would start to mod my wife's formula with my "leftovers" Broke an exhaust manifold bolt and had to pull the motor to extract it. Went to put the cam in while it was out and on the stand and couldn't get the lifters to stay up with my dowl tools, after much inspection figured out one of the lifter trays was fractured. Pulled the heads and noticed oil residue in the water jacket. I will say, the oil is clean and the car ran like a champ, so I'm suspecting the power steering cooler failed....already planned to delete this during the cam swap.

The debate: hoping there are no issues like a crack in the block that's causing oil to collect in the coolant and throwing it back together, or milling the 317's I have and putting in the LQ9 which just got a fresh hone/rings etc.

if I run the 317s how much should I mill? PTV is NOT an issue, I own fly cutting tools for stock size LS valves.

The cam that us going in is a Tick Stage 2 LS2 (231/235) which ran fantastic in my stock LS1, however it was designed more for the 364ci motors.

Opinions are welcome

Jon

Check the 5.3 heads carefully for cracks. Specifically, near the center 3 head bolts. If they have a raised casting mark that looks like a D cell battery, they're the dread Castech garbage, and that's about 99.99% certain where the water in the oil is coming from. If so, changing the heads will fix that.

We are talking stock LS1 (2001 year) on the car with oil residue in the jacket. Stock 241's came off it this evening.

The 5.3 for the turbo car has a set of 799's on it. So no worries with castech bull crap.
