Default LS1 / LS7 Lifter Differences

Have an LS1 with the dreaded lifter knock after 146,000 miles. Getting ready to open ‘er up and replace the lifters with new. Everyone is telling me to go with LS7 lifters as a replacement. I’m reluctant to do this unless I have an exact knowledge of why the LS7 lifters are 100% compatible. What exactly are the design differences between the LS1 lifters and the LS7 lifters. Trying to stay stock BTW.....

Same lifters exact replacement, I'd probably get a set of Delphi lifters only to be sure you get OEM parts. Gotta watch sellers will advertise one thing when its another in disguise. Most all your lifters are made by the same company! Be careful who you buy from, today who knows what you are buying. Example the Melling lS lifters at Autozone and the sealed power lifters from Advance are the same lifters made in the place. Its all a lot of marketing BS.

Sorry for my delayed response. Good advice given by you. I was wondering if there were any specific design changes between the LS1 lifters and the LS7 lifters. If no design change then why would they bother to call them "LS7 Lifters"? I really enjoy researching these things and don't want to pull the trigger on something like this unless I know EXACTLY what I am doing. So far, you've been a great help.

There were some "evolutionary" improvements that were first used on the LS7 as I understand it, then they became the de facto lifter for all LS engines

If you take your Ls1 to a GM dealer to be rebuilt, it will get LS7 lifters.

Here you go, hopefully this provides what you need. The OP of the thread is retired from GM.

While you are in there I would replace the pickup o ring and oil pump. Read up on it all and do it right the 1st time. That effin o ring is the cause of so many troubles, its a POS design.

I have heard a lot about the pick up O-Ring. I am planning on looking into that as well.
