Default Is my cam too small?

6.0 swap in 03 silverado, prc 2.5 5.3 heads, Holley hi ram intake, long tube headers, comp cam 227/235 .614/.621, built 4l60 with yank 3600 stall. Truck laid down 358 rwhp and 325 ft lbs torque. At drag strip truck has managed a best of 13.08 at 101 and 8.34 at 84. All with 1.98 60. Truck hooks very good on drag radials and doesnt appear to be spinning. Best i can tell its hooking. Ordered new torquer v2 cam from Texas speed which is 232/234 .600/.600. Will new cam possibly pick up any more power. Truck now is putting down numbers and times like a cam only 5.3. Any help is appreciated. Done compression test and all cylinders were around 140 psi. None stuck up very high or low.

How's the tune? Sounds to me like with the combo you have it should be doing much better. The tune will make or break a build!

The guy doing the tune is very reputable around here with ls motors. It appears the tune is pretty good too. Its seems Ive never had luck with comp cam so hopefully matching Texas speed heads and cam may be a bump?

What rpm are you shifting at, at the strip?

6400 is where my shift points are set up. Looking at dyno sheet power seemed to start falling off around 6550?

With gaskets i have and the heads i bought are 58cc heads, compression should be around 10.8-11.0

I agree with Darth. That intake wants rpm, and compression is going to help everywhere. Your original camshaft is similar to the new ASA hot cam, and most guys are seeing 420-430 to the tires with that cam, and a good tune. I’m not so sure going to a smaller camshaft is going to make you faster with that particular combo.

Yeah i was thinking compression numbers should be around 170-185? Supposedly engine is 100k mile motor but when installing cam and all, the cam bearings and all appeared to be in great condition.

The exhaust is a single 3 axle dump. But Ive seen single 3 exhaust make more than i am. The torquer v2 is smaller on the lift side but its picking up 5 degrees on the intake and losing 1 on the exhaust.

Holley high ram? I'd run a Fast 92 or 102.

Your also shifting at to low of a rpm. You always want to go past peak before shifting. Somewhere in the 6700-6800 rpm range for your cam.

another thing to think about Is what track and the elevation/DA may be throwing off your times and mph if you're above at like 4000'.
edit-I dunno how well that current cam is but the new torquey cam V2 looks similar to my old voodoo cam in my previous firebird built and it ran great even on stock 9.4:1 compression with 317 heads and it trapped above 115mphon a 3200 stall. however I raced it at cecil which is 500' above sea level and I think the DA when I ran it was somewhere around 800-900' that night.
edit2-how much does your truck weigh?

140 psi cranking is pretty low. I'd be working on bringing that up. That's about what a 9:1 motor does, been a long time since I've hooked up to a 9:1 but iirc that's about where they are. But if all numbers are equal that's usually a good indicator that everything is sealing. With your 58cc heads I'd be looking for about 200 psi but this is all subjective because the cam comes into play and affects DCR

I wonder if you could possibly have the cam a tooth off or if the cam itself might be a hair off.

Did you happen to do a compression test with the stock cam?

never done compression test with stock cam. Truck originally had a 5.3 and i pulled it and swapped in the 6.0. For some strange reason i just keep thinking its the cam. It could be a bad grind or it may not jive with the combo i have and thats why Im hoping that the torquer v2 will work well with the heads. Either that or the engine is worn and Ill just spray it until it finally gives and start building a stroker for it.

LOL I like the way you think.

I'm real curious to see how it goes with the new cam and what the compression numbers end up at.

What size tire?

Also, shift at 6800. See if it picks up. I shift at 7100 with a 227 intake lobe. But I have more head/compression/intake/header/exhaust/exhaust duration. And more stall...
