Default 317 vs 243 vs l92

im building an lq4 and I’m in the process of choosing heads, I’d like to keep the heads mostly stock maybe some milling but nothing crazy. The options I currently have are the 317s that came on the motor, some 243s I can get for 400$ Canadian or some l92s at the same price.

What vehicle?, plans, goals, & usage?
Those parameters will help to solicit opinions.

It’ll be going into a 1970 Chevelle, I’d like to make 450-500 to the flywheel. Car is driven around town a lot with the occasional weekend at the track and some light highway cruising

Tyler, the 317 heads on your LQ4 are basically a 243 head with a much bigger chamber. Nothing wrong with them, but in stock form, you will be compression limited. I’m not sure how much you can cut them before you run into intake manifold fitment issues. You can have the chambers welded up, but you’d likely have more money in the 317’s than a $400 set of 243’s assuming the 243’s are in usable shape. The 243’s will work with your existing manifold, and in stock form will give you a decent boost in performance. With the right camshaft, you’d have a very strong running car.
L92’s are a great option, but you’d have to find an intake. I think you’d be very happy with the 243’s, for what your doing.
You can likely sell the 317’s for $150 or so, and recoup some dough.

I'd do TSP stage 1 243's. Great all around head and probably only give up 10 hp to the rectangles up top but still pull like a freight train.

And lest you forget, 799's are exactly the same as 243's.
