Default First start after full rebuild questions

Just wondering if after a rebuild (2006 5.3) with piston rings and TSP low lift cam, do I have to seat the rings right at first start up or will I be able to fire it up and make sure theres no leaks and such. Then do I drive to break it in or do I need to take it to the dyno tune first? any help is appreciated.

that's kind of the route I was thinking of going. do some decel pulls for the rings then do an oil change and get it to the dyno?

This is what I did. I brought my pcm to my tuner and had him flash a rough tune so the car would run *somewhat* properly. You have to be careful because the stock tune may run the car too rich and wash oil off the cylinder walls and destroy your rings.

I started mine, let it run for a few minutes, and then discovered a leak at my water pump. Once I got that sorted I took it out for a drive. Once it was warmed up I took it up to 6k a few times in 2nd, letting the engine coast back to 1500.

after that I took it to my tuner and got the full tune done.

that sounds pretty solid, what kind of info did your tuner need to get you that rough tune? just cam specs and such?

That, plus full engine specs, rear end ratio, car weight, exhaust system, and anything else that could affect tune. The more info, the closer to perfection the tune can be.

ok I think I might be in the clear right now then, when I had all the VATS and emissions removed I sent him all that above info minus the exhaust info.

For a startup tune engine specs and cam specs should get you close enough.

Call your tuner and tell him the situation and get his input

It will likely be fine on the current tune to run it at idle and low throttle, but always good to confirm with the tuner and see what info or solutions he may offer.

Cool, that sounds like a good idea. Next question then, anyone know of a good tuner in California? willing to drive (tow) to get to someone who know what the F*** they are doing. lol
