Oh yeah you'll be good. I'm actually working on a 370 build but I will be running 823's with an LS3 intake.

Nice! I picked up a 228r cam to go with it. I didn't really have a "set goal" more or less so I don't get disappointed, but I'm very hopeful it's a strong setup. Is the 370 a stroked ls3?

No not at all. You have to reach a 4.065 bore to reach an LS3 or 376.

If you take a 6.0 block which is a 4.00 bore and take it to 4.030 and run just a stock stroke which is 3.622 you get a 370. Go to a 4 inch crank set up which will require a different style piston but you will then stroke to a 408.

It all depends on what you want to do in LS land, but the cost goes up with HP. The iron block with quality forged internals is good way past 1000hp, but a quality forged RA is going to be $2,500 easy. If the block you get has the nodular iron crank it should do all you want to do even some boost. If you are thinking you might boost it later splurge for some forged dished pistons and keep the compression under 10:1 so you are not pounding the rods and crank so bad. I don't know what year they switched but some of the 6.0s have better rods than others, not sure if it is powdered metal or what but the newer ones are stronger.

Having said all that, there are thousands of guys taking junkyard blocks in decent shape and bolting on some ported heads, dropping in a nice cam (580 - 590 lift) & timing set, some springs with a trunion upgrade, long tubes, and a good tune that can turn 400 at the crank all day.

I might scope the salvage yards for a engine, I know a few shops around here... Pretty sure the company that works alongside t.e.a. and trick flow in talmadge could do the work to prep it. If not, I can check wih my friend and his dad that have a shop they send stuff to from their garage.

OriginallyO rigi was nothing over 400 but that was if I was keeping the tranny and rear end stock. Plan to get tranny rebuilt and new rear end when it blows lol. Unless someone has a good reason to stay with the 5.7?
Honestly for 400whp I would keep the 100lbs off the nose and just do a refresh on the ls1 that 100lbs is gonna eat up the extra 18 cubic inches

Sorry for not clarifying... When I started my rebuild project in September... 400 was the limit then with stock drivetrain... But I'm going to be strengthening the rear end and tranny. I know hp means allot but I still want something with good low end torque. Don't want to wind out the stock 5.7 just for some extra "peak" HP. Ls2 ggidea sounds good, I'm planning to lighten the front end with a new k member to help keep it light up there... Would be nice to keep the block and stoke to to a 383

I really appreciate the responses, I like getting different ideas, seeing different projects. It's all new for me.

I picked up a lq4 with 120k on it for $1000. Complete pan to manifold with all accessories, harness, and ecm. Tore it down and sold off some of the truck stuff and recouped about $350 back. Was gonna be a quick junkyard swap, but decided to punch it .030 over, flat tops, built 243s, cam etc. It adds up fast so buy in as cheap as possible if your plan is to build it. Just doing a quick swap, spend a little more on a clean, low mileage engine.

There's no replacement for displacement so if your looking to go NA then go for the cubes. When it comes to hot rodding I've learned that it's never enough, it's always something and when bad **** happens it gets real expensive...

Yeah definitely agree on that. The gf saw the block and asked was I gonna put my ole' ls1 in her firebird (99 v6) lol... Just as long as she's on board with it she's cool with the new motor idea. IDK how she feels about the price of the ones that are complete though haha

Well then find a 6.0, do flattops (or find a lq9) 823 heads ls3 intake biggest cam you can stand and invest in a GOOD converter
can’t beat that for the money and if you get bored a 150 shot will make you smile at the track

And that's my next build! Only I'm going with 12cc dome pistons, with forged rods and having it tuned for ethanol. I've been told I could go pump gas with 12.5:1 and I may go that route with a dedicated and NOS.

This is a mistake in my opinion. Have a set goal before you start the project and leave a path for progressing. For example I bought my GTO 2 years ago and put the 228r cam and headers on it. I knew I wanted either a turbo or supercharger so I picked a cam that while not ideal for either it would work well enough. The headers I knew I could sell no problem if I went turbo. I ended up going procharger. When I got the procharger I went ahead and got all the upgraded stuff right off so I had it because I knew eventually I'd go with a forged motor and want it.

The 228r through an stalled auto made 390 rwhp for me cam only. No under driven accessories and untouched 241's (other than btr spring kit), stock ls6 intake, and untouched throttle body.

I see your point, but reason for not having a min goal was so I didn't get my hopes up on the work. I know what my car can handle as is... Hence why I don't have a procharger or ms3 cam. Could make easy HP that way but it's expensive lol. Although I'd love anything more than to hear that supercharger whine... I'm trying to "enjoy" the build. Learn along the way, gain new skills from it. If I really wanted I could've drove up to alphamotorsports and dropped it off like I wanted to last year. Pay someone out the *** money I could put somewhere else. Maybe on the next build I'd see about the procharger. Dad got a 92 with the tur- ehh.... 5.0 in it. Maybe I can talk him into a LS swap? How easy was the procharger install? You tune it yourself?

I’m sure a lot will disagree with me here but I wouldn’t do a pro charger on a street engine (or any centrifugal supercharger) mainly for the lack of low end power compared to top end power. I don’t mind revving my junk though so it wouldn’t matter for me but most people would get much more enjoyment from a roots style blower or even better a properly sized turbo setup. Just my 2 cents as I’ve driven them all

When I say have a plan I don’t necessarily mean a power goal. I mean a plan for the build to put a combo together that works well and works toward your future goals as well.

I do all all my own installs and tuning. I’ve never built a short block and I don’t know anything about building transmissions. Tuning is my strength my 228r cam idles so smooth it barely sounds cammed. I’m making about 600 rwhp through the auto trans on stock bottom end, but I’m planning a motor build because I want more.

eta: I have the helical cut gears so the procharger is relatively quiet. At idle with the hood open it’s loud, but driving around it’s not that noticeable. Much different than an F1a with straight cut gears, but similar power capability.
