Default Is this piston ruined?

I bought these used off a guy on Facebook. Everything went smooth with the transaction and he said these pistons were in good shape. But 2 pistons I received had marks or were chipped. Are these ruined and if so should I ask for money back considering he said all 8 were good to go?

This is how the box came

The chunk missing from the skirt in the first pic might worry me a little, could maybe throw the balance off? But then again maybe not I do not know.

The second pic doesn't look bad, just need to carefully knock down any high spots protruding up from the piston skirt with some emery cloth.

The third picture makes me wonder if USPS is to blame?

The nicked one could just be lightly sanded smooth.....
but the one with a chunk missing..... No way id run that lol
Im sure they got beat up in shipping by looking at that box, the seller should have known to package them better than that.
Did he get insurance on shipping?

EDIT: To slow lol

So these little nicks I shouldn’t worry about?
The chunk I was worried about as well.

No, I wouldn't worry about the little knicks or gouges, just dress them down with some emery or something and make sure they're smooth and don't stick out farther than any of the rest of the piston. I can't say for sure if that chunk missing would be a problem. I think if it were me though, I'd be questioning either USPS and/or the seller in terms of what happened. Did the seller not package them right like Ls7colorado said. And/or did USPS just throw it around and break it.

yes I just heard back from him. He got $50 shipping ins and he said he will make it right. He packaged it ok.. but those pistons are too heavy for that box in my opinion.
I’m just glad he messaged back and said he would make it right. Summit racing has a stock ls1 piston for $51 so I’m not out too much money.

The mindset everyone should use when shipping something is, "if I put this box in the back of my truck and go run the Baja 500", will the parts be good when I finish. If the answer is no, then pack them better.

I wish more people would hold themselves to this standard. I've been buying and selling used parts for 20 years and it's pretty amazing some of the **** I've seen show up that barely made it. Most recently was a decent deal on a near new LS6 intake which as most no are kind of fragile to ship. Basically showed up rattling around in an empty box.

I don't know maybe I'm **** because I work on very expensive helicopters for a living and am often shipping parts that cost upwards of a 100k.

That piston with the chunk out of the oil land looks to have oil staining on it and I would say it was run like that in the previous engine. i suspect as the engine runs , the oil scraper will eventually hook on the edge of that space caused by the chunk missing and be a source of an easier path for the oil to go where it shouldn't.

I agree. Oil will likely get by the Oil rings there. I’ve thrown pistons away in much, much better shape than these. In my opinion, they are trash. OP, call WS6Store. They will get you into a new set of pistons and rings for super cheap.

Didnt even see that!
Ive gotta agree with the others, thrw those in the scrap pile and order some new ones, especially since you said your taking the block to the machine shop! I highly doubt the machinist would even put those slugs in anyways

I missed that also. If it was just the gouges that could be knocked down with some emery that would be one thing, but yeah, the pieces broken from the oil ring land and skirt probably mean it's junk.
