Funny. I had thought I blew a ton of money on cars until I talked to a buddy about his horses. Horse eats whether you use it or don't. I think by the time we were done talking he spent in three years what i've spent on the entire hobby.

You know what i WISH I could have back? The money I spent on the "budget" build. Funny to say I don't regret the money I spent on top shelf parts, but I wish I had never bought the low end stuff that all had to come back out anyway.

Hindsight really is 20/20. I probably would have gone boost immediately and had kept the stock motor at least initially. Then again, working my way up in power was useful for learning how to handle said power.

For the car - a 427 (built myself from used and new parts) $6300
For the truck - a 383 (built by myself TWICE from new and used parts) $5400

Currently building another motor for the truck and pulling the car motor out for smaller cubes so I can put in a Procharger. I'm afraid to look at what that will cost!!

I gave up Hookers & Cocaine for Golf clubs and Hot Rods, it costs about the same and I'm still getting fucked and light headed!!

Chad

I've often joked cocaine would have been a cheaper habit than hotrodding (and less addictive). So, assuming hookers and golf cost about the same as each other, apparently I was wrong and cocaine is exactly as expensive as hotrodding

I always dreamed about a HCI setup for my car. But then I realized how much people are spending and my ideas have changed. If I ever start doing **** to this car I think I'll go procharger. Maybe a cam, but I'll take my power in one big kit that I can bolt together in my garage easily. You get power AND a nasty blower whine. win win

All prices retail ;-)

372 build break down.
Traded a few tunes for a 6.0 that was making some noise. Came complete with everything really minus a few accy. So that was a FREEBIE. Had gen4 rods already.

Rpmspeed 243/799 castings with surface job, 3 angle seats and stock valves $850.

LEADFOOT 2.000/1.57 valves $189.

Ws6store beehive cam kit $515 - ws6store high lift hot cam with pac 1218 beehives

Ls7 lifter kit with ls2 trays - $139

Rpmspeed hd rockers - $215 reused stock bolts

Rpmspeed Heavy Duty Rebuild Kit - melling 10295 and billet timing chain set $775

Include new plug kit $18

Basically $2700

machine work but that was only $800 ish

All labor free

333 build
I already had a spare ls2 block and a set of 4.8 rods (gen3) and 4.8 crank. I had the rods machined for a floating pin and arp rod bolts installed
I also had a spare set of 243s so that kept costs down there. just needed to guides replaced, cleaned and seats cut.

Total cost as follows
RPMSpeed Complete rebuild kit (minus oil pump and timing set) $565
LEADFOOT 2.055 intake valves $99
LEADFOOT 1.60 exhaust valves $99
Manley 221438 nextek beehives $299

RPMSpeed SCREAMER big bore cam (soon to be released) $389
Melling oil pump 10295 $125
N motion 7240 timing set $89
Custom manton 11/32 pushrods $149
Arp pro2000 rod bolts $99
MAX EFFORT Rpmspeed rocker arms $299

Machine work
Torque plate bore/hone $285
Clean, remove cam bearings, install new $125
Floating pin rod work with hone and arp rod bolt install $140
Check/square deck and check main bore alignment $175
Polish/check crank $75
Balance rotating assy $210
Clean/Surface heads and cut larger seats for valves with 3 angle vj and back cut on valves (replace 2 guides) $300

Total price $4217

IRON 427 BUILD
Had a spare 6.0 block so that was free and another set of 243s kickin around again...free.

So machine work was close to the 372 at about $800.
$450 to balance crank with heavy metal

Rotating assy $2200 forged rods scat, forged pistons mahle powerpak 4.065, forged 4.100 crank.

Had a used donkey dick cam i had polished $45

Try buying this stuff when your dollar only buys 70 cents to the US dollar, and then you pay overseas shipping costs and then another 10-15% tax on top of all of that. Then see how you feel.

I have more into a head, cam, intake and header car than I expected due to having to buy some parts twice to replace defective ones. My Hooker headers leaked at the head. My Holley Sniper TB wouldn't idle. The car sounds great and runs great but for the amount I have in it, I could have done a LS3 swap.

You and me both. My 346 build seems to have cost as much as both of Mavns builds combined, and they are both awesome budget builds. I sure wouldn't mind a 600 whp 416!
