Default Camshaft/Valve clearance question

I have installed a bunch of cams that produced 560-580" valve lift with zero valve clearance issues. I recently picked up an unidentified cam that will produce a .612" lift.

Is there a general rule of thumb about lift and clearance. Simply stated - you don't typically have valve clearance issues until XXX lift. I understand it depends on duration and other cam specification. I am asking a for a general rule of thumb answer.

My goal is to toss it into an engine with valve springs and run it. I am hoping to avoid pulling heads and clearancing work.

What heads? Lots of variables here. Duration plays a larger role than lift does. Springs must be set up for the camshaft. Pushrod length prolly won’t be right either. Your asking for trouble in my opinion, to just throw a combination together and go.

The general rule is to always check and never assume.

Sucks but true.

Otherwise if you have the cam name or full spec sheet someone may be able to say that that particular cam is known to not be an issue if x y and z are a b and c.

I would get that thing put on a cam doctor to figure out what you have before stuffing it in your engine and hoping for the best...
