Default max overbore limit

How hard and fast is the .010 overbore limit? What would be the problems with a little over that? This is for a 2000 LS1 block, it has rough spots that may not be fixable at .010, the machine shop isn't sure yet. I have seen the Hot Rod magazine article that says .010 is the max. I also don't know what piston sizes are available over .010.

I think people have gone further but it's a crapshoot as to how long it will last. If you feel like rolling the dice do it.

What he said.

Boring an LS1 block more than .010 over is like taking a dump with the lid to the toilet closed. You CAN do it....but should you? You might come out smelling like a rose and leave a nasty mess for someone else to clean up later or you might end up in the middle of the nasty mess.

There have been folks do .020 over and it ran for a while...long enough to trade / sell the car...not sure how long the engines ransomed probably didn't have any issues.

A lot of it will depend on if the liners were perfect /near perfect. Might try sonic checking the block to see what you have to work with. Could save an expensive mistake.

My 383 LS1 has .005 hone that cleaned up nicely.

With that said, a friend had a small block Chevy, 30 years ago he was told his block couldn't go .060 over. He's a mechanic said **** it and had that block punched .080 over and it's still running today. It you give it any rpm it will start to over heat FAST. It's in his wrecker and seldom sees 2,000 rpm. He's hauled my 72 vette home after break downs a few times

You CAN do just about anything....
Doesn't mean it won't come back to haunt you in the future.
