Default Need some help and advice on cam swap quick! Thanks

I have a chance to get 03 LS6 springs and new stock length chromoly pushrods for under $100. They have been used for 7k, but seller claims excellent condition. I can also get a used LS6 cam on CF very cheap. I want low torque and do not want to sacrifice driveability. If I traded or sold the car I would not want the buyer to know by sound that it was cammed.

If I wanted to go with a 02-03 LS6 cam and this setup in my LS1 do I need longer pushrods?

Will the cam, springs, rods work with stock retainers and not give any issues?

What kind of gains could I get with this cam only?

What would idle and driveability be like in comparision to stock?

Would LS6 heads work better than my LS1 heads?

Would the cam only work well with a 100 shot TNT N2O kit?

Thanks

Cajun

yes.....you will need +0.050" pushrods as the base circle is smaller on the LS6 cam (designed to work with LS6 heads that had longer valve stems)...

if you have the car tuned it will idle like a stock Z06 (since thats what it came out of )...if not (stock tune) then it won't drive very good

yes...you will have more head flow, higher compression, the good valve springs, longer valves (won't need longer pushrods), and lighter valves (LS6 are hollow so higher RPM)...

no worse than a Z06 with a 100 shot

There is no use of buying the springs and the pushrods then as I would need to buy new pushrods of a longer length. LOL There goes that and Thank you very much for your help. You just saved me some time and money.

now with your questions answered.......there are better cams out there that will idle just as well and make more power.......

LS6 cam is a GM cam designed to get a car through emissions under all conditions and be able to go for 100K miles without a valve spring change...it’s not a performance cam. You would do better to get Comp 918 valve springs and a better cam.

7.38" .....it’s a little shorter than the 7.4" everyone runs but its the closest you can get (within the lifters ability to make up for).....

So I could buy the rods at a good price and get a better cam new or used. Would that be the recommendation? What cam would work with stock pushrods, 2800 Stall converter, N2O and the other mods in my sig? Thanks guys for your help and time!

I personally would get those chromoly pushrods IF they are brand new (never been run). Brand new from Comp they are ~$110 so keep that in mind.

Since you want it to idle like stock (or close), look at something under the 220 range. If it were my car I would go with 215/220 115LSA (they call it their "old man" cam). It would idle really nice and that extra exhaust would work well with the spray (which can be upwards of a 150 shot on a stock LS1). You can either just buy Comp 918s (LS6 springs will not work) and keep your stock heads, or you can have someone port you a set of heads and they will come with 918s (or whatever spring you tell them to use).

To give you a comparison, the 02+ LS6 cam is a 204/218, .551"/.547", 116LSA. As you can see it has A LOT of exhaust duration and very little intake.
