Remember 4.8L really just want RPM to make power so a 3.73-4.56 rear gear would make it a "combo" ie it would be really good at any speed

I've got both early and later cams on my shelf, if I had a degree wheel I would measure but I think by the internet average it's really a
198/209 119.5 lsa possibly with -2.5 degrees ground in for an estimated installed intake centerline of 122 degrees

It's designed for a 346" engine with well more than 10:1 compression

Yes your right. I looked somewhere else. Well, I was trying to keep the cost down but looks like I will have to get a 4 8 cam motion or btr cam. I'm starting to understand this cam stuff a bit more.

What you guys think the estimated hp/tq would be with the 4.8/ 706 heads worked and milled to yield at least 10.0-10:1, btr or cam motion truck cam something like stage 2 - 202/206 525 -550 lift, new valve springs, ls6 intake, stock 4.8 converter&4l60e, 1 3/4 long tubes , injector size?, 3:08 gear,

Sounds like a fun driver. Just get it going first with the stock LS1 cam though, keep it quiet while you sort out the chassis trust me because after you drive it a while you will end up wanting a stall converter and a bigger cam than a 202/206. Don't forget polyurethane motor mounts and a stock soft rubber trans mount will probably be best

01-'02........12561721.............196/207...................0.467/0.479

According to the chart If this is the case it won't make any sense swapping

I thought he had the 98-2000 cam with 496-500 lift
The 4.8/5.3 cam is 190/191 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.466" / 0.457" int/exh lift

3.08 gear and stock converter no way I would waste my time or money on a cam. Just leave it alone untill you can do converter and bigger cam like mentioned earlier

I got a line on the 0965 ls1 cam.

'99-'00........12560965.............198/209...................0.500/0.500................119.5**

I would want to go with this one because it has more lift. Would this one be ok?

I went through the same debate when I put my 4.8 in my camaro. I tried all the stock stuff before I finally threw a little comp 212/218 shelf grind in mine. The 1721 is going to best the 9065 in the 4.8 at any RPM below 5000 and will be quicker from a dig with your 3.08 gear. Sure the 9065 has a little more lift but it also closes the intake valve significantly later (search valve events) and will give less dynamic compression, which of all the Ls engines the little 4.8 is most sensitive in that department. My 212/218 115+0 comp gives 5psi more cranking compression than the 1721 on my 4.8 and pulls off idle just as well. The 9065 was slightly weaker off idle than the 1721 and thought it might make 5-10 more hp up top, it just isn't worth it with a 3.08 gear. Now put a 3.73+ in there and you can get more agressive

I see. My buddy has a bunch of stock ls stuff I can use from his engine that had 30k on it

Ls1 stock torque converter

Lifters and guides

1721 cam

862 heads

Valve springs

Etc...

I do plan on eventually upgrading the rear end, suspension, stall, and transmission. I will be basically getting the car ready for a iron ls1 build but driving it around on weekends and stuff.

Just curious, what are your full cam specs?

Yes but barely noticeable, probably the same but it screams from 3k-7k+!

It would seem the 1721 and 0965 cams would be better cam all around in the 4.8 due to lower valve closing and lift.. Hows the cam you have out perform these cams?

It's an aftermarket grind, it's not a stock cam designed for a larger engine being used in a smaller one. Just read back through the thread again I've explained all this already. Happy 4th

Happy 4th. Just finished hosting bbq and crab boil!

Ok. I just re-read the whole thread. If I'm not an idiot I believe you stated that you had a 2:73 rear end. If so, it sounds like its working for you all things considered

I just want to do this cam thing one time. The supporting mods will come after. (I.E. rear end, stall,suspension,etc..)

I also understand its probably impossible to do this because its probably best to install it for the 3.08 gear and stock converter I currently have.

Bingo! Just get it running with the stock cam then!
